Kim Murphy, MS
Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern #IMH7610,

Are you wondering if your child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Asperger Syndrome might benefit from seeing a mental health counselor?
Are you thinking that your child may need help coping with having a sibling who is on the Autism Spectrum and everything that comes with it?
Are you feeling confused, sad, stressed out, worried, and/or angry about your child’s ASD diagnosis? Do you feel like no one understands what you’re going through?
Children as well as adults sometimes need help to discuss their feelings about family issues, particularly if there’s a major transition, such as a divorce, move, or serious illness. Individuals on the Autism Spectrum and their families may find themselves under an extreme amount of stress that leads to problems with behavior, mood, sleep, appetite, and academic or social functioning.
I offer a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Art Therapy in an environment of gentleness, caring, encouragement, praise, firmness, consistency and persistence. This includes work on thought restructuring, stress management strategies, relaxation training, and practicing social and coping skills. I find that the therapy process is enhanced by allowing children to express what is on their minds through creating art. These images allow the child to initiate and discuss issues with me more genuinely and spontaneously then they are likely to do otherwise. Their images help me to understand the feelings and perceptions they have about their experiences and to explore alternatives to solving problems.
I have earned a Fine Arts degree from the University of West Georgia as well as a Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University. I am an elementary school teacher of Pre-K/Kindergarten students who are on the Autism Spectrum, as well as a therapist. I am committed to helping children with Autism, as well as their siblings and parents, find the best quality of life.
